Pale Truths, presented in the exhibition Welcome to Parkview Green III —— Parkview Contemporary Art Collection, is a representative collage-painting work by Donald Baechler. The combination of a large variety of techniques including silk-screening, collage and embroidery is aimed at representing iconic elements of popular culture giving a three-dimensional character to the depicted objects.

The word “Collage” comes from the French verb "coller", meaning "paste". In English, it is a verb and a nounto make a collage it means to paste paper, cloth or other materials on a two-dimensional surface to create a collage artwork.

After the first World War, artists have enriched the experiments with the technique of collage: they created multifaceted collage works including textual elements, fragments of photos, mass-produced advertising printed matter, black-and-white or color photos from newspapers and magazines. Any hand-made cut and paste element could become a good material to create a collage.

Collage is characterized by different techniques, not only in terms of color and texture, but also in terms of content: images are visually organized in an unrealistic display which highlights the ironic and provocative character of the work’s narrative. Collage has deeply influenced the new creative forms and concepts in the artistic arena in the 20th century.

The theme of this event is named after Donald Baechler’s exhibited artwork “Pale Truths”. During the event, children will be guided to explore the interesting characteristics of collage art and to understand the reasons why artists love this technique. Children will use a wide range of materials to complete a unique and interesting collage artwork of their own.
