Wang Yuping creates a very suggestive, complex, intensive imaginary aura,in which the different aspects of realities live in symbiosis with otheraspects and systems. The human bodies are posed in differentsituations—partly artificial, partly imaginary—at the borderlinebetween everyday reality and fiction, between conventional, habitualconstellations and unusual, irritating improbabilities. The “mask” character ofthe faces he represents/invents on his canvases, which reveals some strange, somewhat disturbing similarities with some cultural patterns, like certainconnotations or citations from the art history, or so-called everyday life, arequestioning the concreteness of the concrete, singular phenomenon, therelationship between personal identity—particular, unique, psychicallydetermined—and culturally learned, interiorized patterns and habits, in a verycomplex, crowded, contradictory constellation of our contemporary culture. That’s why he is working a lot with portraits, whichare masked by other identities and human realities. The “doubled”presentation of his figures as “originals” and as “acting” alter ego figures, reveals a deep, serious engagement withthe “real,” but at the same time a certain pre-occupation because of thedifficulties of separating the “original” from the culturally created “doubledworld,” the “original” from the “cultural role”: as “cultural roles” areproduct of history.” (Lorand Hegyi)
